From the editor's Desk: Chromecast a go-go

Chromecast and Moto X

I think I just saved $500 by spending $35.

I'll most likely be canceling my Xbox One subscription this week. It's not that I wouldn't love to have one — I loathe that aging, noisy beast that's currently in my living room. But it's getting harder and harder to justify that much money on some that's mostly been replaced by a $35 USB-powered dongle. No, I won't be playing hardcore games with it, and it doesn't get anywhere near replacing Kinect. But I think I'm going to be replacing my old Xbox with a cheap Blu-Ray player and calling it a day.

But maybe the most important part of Chromecast is one that's gotten short shrift in nearly every review I've read, including ours. Chromecast is in its infancy. Having an SDK — software development kit — means that anyone and everyone can essentially write an app for it. Koushik Dutta — the developer behind ClockwordMod recoveries and Helium backup (to name but two projects) has been teasing a few on Google+. Streaming local files from a phone or tablet. Streaming files from Dropbox. Streaming files from RSS (and wrapping them in individual channel UIs).

And that's just one developer.

Reviews of devices are great. But it's important to remember that Chromecast is just getting started, with the SDK currrently available as a developer preview. It'll be interesting to how the ecosystem grows. You can't yet distribute Chromecast apps. Will it be a walled garden? Wide open like Android? I imagine anything that plays alongside DRM-enabled apps like Netflix will have a bit of oversight along with it.

AP PHOTOS: Crisis-displaced matadors turn to Peru

LACHAQUI, Peru (AP) ? His left knee to the ground, Nuno Casquinha theatrically tosses away his red cloth, muleta and sword and stares down the bleeding bull that is scratching the dirt with its hooves in a haze of rage.

Casquinha pivots, rising to his feet, and turns his back on the fuming half-ton beast, its rack of sharp horns just paces away.

The crowd jumps to its feet and cheers the 27-year-old Portuguese matador whose Iberian elan graces the makeshift ring on the edge of a cemetery in Lachaqui, a tiny town more than 12,000 feet (3,700 meters) up in the Andes.

"If you don't kill the bull, we'll kill you," a group of drunkards shouts, hurling bottles.

Casquinha is unruffled, and the spectacle ends with the bull slain and the matador on the shoulders of an ecstatic farmer, villagers clamoring for his autograph, pleading to be photographed with him.

The Lisbon native is among dozens of bullfighters, mostly Spaniards, who are hoping to gain the fame in Latin America that the economic crisis back home, compounded by rising ethical opposition to the bloody sport, has made near impossible.

The number of annual bullfights in Europe nearly halved to 1,997 last year from the crisis' inception in 2008 and is down an additional 15 percent this year, said Vicente Royuela, a University of Barcelona economist who studies the sport.

When the trim, blue-eyed Casquinha left home early last year, Spain had 765 registered bullfighters competing in the fights, known as "corridas."

He'd only managed to get into one bullfight in the first four months of last year, spending his time instead raising bulls on his parents' farm and training in the family's basement, "imagining all the bulls I would never see."

Even before hard times bit, only 10 percent of bullfighters in Spain got more than 20 fights a year and half quit after six years, Royuela said.

"Things were so bad, with no bullfighting in Europe, that I decided to take whatever I could," Casquinha said over coffee on a gray afternoon in the working class Lima district of San Felipe where he lives.

Peru, his friends told him in Facebook chats, was the place to be. Not Lima's storied Acho ring where accomplished matadors entertain the capital's elite, but the Peru of rugged mountains and unknown backwater corridas where the Spanish tradition is as alive as ever, the bulls have no pedigree and getting gored is best avoided because hospitals are scarce.

"In Mexico, I know, you've got to pay (to fight) when you are starting," he said. "In Colombia, when you discount the big festivals, there are few events ? same in Venezuela. And in Quito (Ecuador), it's prohibited to kill the bull. Peru was the ticket."

Peru hosts 540 corridas a year, more than any other in Latin America, and protests against the sport are minimal and limited to Acho.

Currently, 59 European bullfighters are active in Peru, according to Agenda Taurina, Peru's leading bullfighting guide. That's nearly three times the 2008 roster.

"There are more bullfights than days in the year," said one of the guide's authors, Dikey Fernandez. "The market is jammed."

The pay, however, is modest.

Star matadors in Spain can charge upward of $200,000 for a single performance while novices like Casquinha don't earn much more than $800 a fight. In rural Peru, the European migrants get paid about $1,500 per outing. Normally, three matadors participate in each "fiesta taurina," or bullfighting event.

Casquinha didn't come for the money. And for his first Peruvian fight he said he hardly deserved the pay, failing miserably in May 2012 in Huancavelica, Peru's poorest region. He felt faint in the high altitude. The bulls were also old and wily, which makes them less ferocious and more dangerous and the fight less dramatic.

With the passing months, he adapted to the altitude, the dangerous mountain roads, the public buses, the cheap hotels and the ringside drunkards. He left behind a girlfriend of six years but is now dating a Peruvian.

He's got 40 Peruvian bullfights notched, and his confidence is up.

"I'm going to leave here a winner, a well-known figure in bullfighting. I'll make a mark. I won't return to Europe a failure," Casquinha asserted during one of his daily two-hour training sessions in a Lima park, where he choreographs moves against phantom bulls.

Experts in Spain say Casquinha may be deluding himself.

"The impact for Spain is zero. It only serves for more such gigs in Andean towns, traveling over those god-forsaken highways," said Antonio Picamills, a former manager to such star matadors as Juan Jose Padilla, who he took to the Peruvian city of Trujillo in 1994 to fight a fearsome 1,000-pound (450-kilogram) bull named Pajarito or "Little Bird."

That corrida did nothing to forward Padilla's career, said Picamills, a writer for Dietario Taurino, Spain's main bullfighting guide. "It was only so he could fight during (Europe's) winter."

Casquinha doesn't care to listen to such talk.

After all, this only child is not even heeding his parents' wishes that he return home and forget his matador dreams.

"For me, life is the bulls ? or nothing."

Thief snatches blind man's iPhone at bus stop

KEIZER, Ore. ? So many of us rely on our cell phones, but probably not as much as a man in Keizer who?s blind.

Earlier this week, someone snatched 29-year-old Josh Bowen?s phone out of his hand and ran off while he stood at a bus stop.

Bowden uses the audible features on the iPhone for directions, to read text messages, and for email.

He also works as an employee at the Oregon Commission for the Blind, teaching others how to use the iPhone.

?They don?t realize what they took from me. To them it?s just another iPhone, but to a person with a disability such as someone who is blind or visually impaired even, these phones, and technology in general, really enhances the quality and independence of their life,? Bowen said.

Bowen has since bought a new phone but it still doesn't take the sting away.

Can crowdfunding be considered social finance? | Blog | Social ...

Social finance is continuing to move into uncharted territory in Canada. However, while crowd equity has yet to barge through the regulatory schema in most Canadian provinces (with the exception of Saskatchewan?see more on its equity crowdfunding proposal here), I decided to look closer at the role crowdfunding can play as a direct competitor, substitute or partner in crime to impact investment.

Before diving into this discussion, I feel that we need to take a few steps back and look at the social finance space, and where, based on its definition, crowdfunding platforms have already and have the potential to fit in. The word social?in social finance typically refers to something which is of benefit to the welfare of individuals comprising a given community. Individuals? welfare within this community depends on multiple factors, including the sustainability and cleanliness of the community and the equity of opportunities available to the community?s members within and outside of its precincts.

This equity of opportunities is precisely what Danae Ringelmann (co-founder of IndieGoGo, one of the world?s largest crowdfunding platforms) stressed as being at the centre of the crowdfunding giant?s mandate?to prioritize the democratization of the financial system. So much so, that, despite the recent controversies regarding crowdfunding fraud (see this snapshot of some divergent uses of funds raised through crowdfunding platforms here), IndieGoGo continues to stay away from curatorship. It prides itself on promoting a faith-based system, which gives every idea equal freedom, and thereby emphasizes the role of crowdfunding as a key tool in unlocking market interests.?

But when putting crowdfunding capital transfers and standard market transactions side by side, do we have an apples-to-apples comparison? When a knowledgeable consumer goes to purchase a product through a well-established platform such as Amazon, is she faced with the same risks as those faced by funders of ?Kobe Red ? 100% Japanese Beer Fed Kobe Beef Jerky? (a fraudulent Kickstarter campaign which almost ran off with the $120,000 it raised through the platform, before Kickstarter axed the project)? And is this consumer motivated by the same drivers as those propelling him to contribute to crowd-funded start-ups? Does groupthink diminish the perception of risk for a crowdfunder? Is there a fragment of altruism associated with giving to a ?collective wallet? to fund an initiative, versus making an isolated purchase?

The question remains: can the socializing of finance be synonymous with social finance? Before you lock in your answer, I would like to put the spotlight on another crowdfunding platform?CSI?s Catalyst. In acknowledging the democratic underpinnings of crowdfunding, Catalyst has sought to do more than facilitate supply and demand dynamics. Its co-founders, Chris Charlesworth and Asier Ania, stressed the importance of educating consumers about the viability of crowdfunding?showcasing crowdfunding as a mechanism for individuals to become more financially engaged. In addition, all of the campaigns on this platform are CSI members, which means that every dollar contributed to a venture through the Catalyst platform will trickle down an intricate supply chain geared toward social growth. A dollar spent here will have far-reaching resonance in the CSI community. Campaigns in the Catalyst world are part of an intertwined network, and accountability and growth are the primary catalysts for the viability of this platform.

Chris and Asier are beaming with the community reach of their platform. They estimate that 40-60% of those enterprises which are funded on their platform are run by women, with those run by minorities not far behind. Since Catalyst is in a sense strengthening webbing within local communities, it could be argued that successful minority-lead initiatives will prompt financial engagement from funders in these minority groups (or vice versa), thereby creating a robust cycle of participation and growth among typically vulnerable fractions of the population. The mission, as Chris and Asier emphasize, is to contribute to a global movement and to internationalize financial participation and social development.

Unlike many other crowdfunding platforms, Catalyst stresses impact as the integral component of those ventures it brings under its umbrella. Chris and Asier stipulate that social causes are more attractive for donors, as people are more likely to see their dollar make a contribution to someone?s well-being. In this sense, social causes should see more traffic on crowdfunding platforms than other sectors. Interestingly enough, this may not necessarily be true for impact investing?where investors who are still operating under traditional financial mandates could reasonably be expected to put their wealth in sustainable food, cleantech, housing, or community infrastructure, says Adam Spence (manager of special projects at the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing). The returns to these sectors, he observes, are more direct and tangible, and provide a more transparent risk-reward trade-off for wary newcomers.

As it stands today, crowdfunding and impact investing are not yet playing in the same sandbox. Crowdfunding is estimated to account for approximately $3 billion worldwide, while impact investing amounts for nearly $5billion in Canada alone. Regulations aside, the potential for growth, according to Adam, is the same for both financial channels; however, it is ultimately impact investing which is more conducive to large amounts of capital to change hands. However, looking at Pebble watch (and the $10 million it raised on Kickstarter), Chris and Asier could not help but emphasize the enormous potential for crowdfunding to be both a complement and a substitute for impact investing. It has the capacity to be both a fund-raising and a market validation mechanism, both explain with enthusiasm.

The idea that crowdfunding failures and successes could serve as investment signals to venture capitalists and impact investors is slowly picking up traction in off-record conversations (I share more thoughts on this in my latest blog). However, the question of the existing and necessary regulatory frameworks is still at the forefront. How can authorities put in place a regulatory structure that will:

  1. Stimulate other Canadian jurisdictions to follow Saskatchewan?s footprints;
  2. Protect consumers against fraud occurrence and intensity lurking in the corners of a generally-unaudited market, and also
  3. Ensure that the democratization of the market is not suffocated in the process?

Should crowdfunding platforms take it upon themselves to do their due diligence and engage in portfolio auditing, much like the vetting process endorsed among microfinance organizations? Is there room for campaigns utilising crowdfunding platforms to self-regulate and instigate community accountability practices? It is evident that crowdfunding is socializing finance, but in order for this tool to become sustainable, credible and relevant to impact investors and donors, we may need to reopen the conversation of how to find an equilibrium between financial regulation and financial inclusion.

[I would like to extend a special thank you to Danae Ringlemann, Adam Spence, Chris Charlseworth and Asier Ania for sharing their candid, insightful and inspiring thoughts and experiences.]?

Apple will keep fake chargers from hacking your iPhone with iOS 7

Last month, researchers at Georgia Tech unveiled a clever hack. Using a tiny Linux computer disguised as a USB charger, they could penetrate any iPhone or iPad's defenses and reportedly install malware in less than a minute. Thankfully, that attack vector will soon be far easier to combat: Apple has added a new prompt that warns users and asks them for permission in the latest beta of iOS 7.

"Don't trust"

Ars Technica originally spotted the new prompt, which you can see below, and Reuters confirmed with Apple that the issue had been addressed. "We would like to thank the researchers for their valuable input," said Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. Until iOS 7 arrives, we suppose you'll need to manually make sure your charger is yours. Afterwards, if you see this message pop up when you plug into what appears to be a simple wall wart, perhaps you should find another power source.

Wedding Etiquette: 5 Tech Tips

Getty Images

Technology has made many things in our lives easier, but there?s no denying that it?s complicated certain things, too. Take etiquette for example, which has become increasingly difficult to navigate in this age of smartphones and?social networks. And in a socially complicated situation like a wedding, figuring out when exactly it?s polite to use your smartphone or snap a picture becomes even more complicated. So what tech rules should you follow to be a good wedding guest?and not upset the happy couple?s big day? We have 5 guidelines to follow for wedding success.

1. Know the sharing ground rules

Depending on the couple, their opinions on sharing photos and other updates on the Internet will vary. Some couples may prefer to keep their ceremony private?and offline. Others might encourage sharing and even recommend?a hashtag?to use or specific social networks to post on in order to make it easier for everyone interact and share memories. But even the more socially-minded couples may not want you sharing certain things?like the bride?s dress before the ceremony begins.

The key to being polite here is to make sure you know the couple?s wishes before you make any posts?look for anything in the invitation or other wedding info you?ve been given that tells you what or where to share. And if you aren?t sure? Don?t post any photos at all (especially of the bachelor/bachelorette party!) And if you have any particularly nice shots, you can always pass them on to the couple privately.

2. Photograph politely

For better or worse, having a smartphone makes all of us?photographers?and videographers, stalking around with our phones in-hand, ready to capture the perfect moment. But if you?re taking pictures?with your cell phone or not?be sure you?re being polite about it.

Do:

  • Snap photos or catch videos to help remember the event and, if the couple allows it, share with friends.
  • Be sure you aren?t blocking anyone?s view when you?re trying to snap photos.
  • Be careful using the flash, which can be disruptive if you?re constantly snapping candids.

Don?t:

  • Follow the bride and groom?or anyone else?around like a paparazzi trying to catch the perfect shot.
  • Take photos with your tablet, which is guaranteed to block someone?s view.

Also be aware that there may be times during which the couple won?t want you taking pictures at all?like during the ceremony. Remember: you?re here to enjoy the wedding, not be glued to your smartphone or camera. If the couple asks you not to take photos at any time, be sure to respect their wishes.

3. Pay attention to the ceremony, not your smartphone!

On that note, remember to pay attention to the ceremony and the people around you rather than your smartphone. Yes, we live in a connected world and most people will understand if you break away from the social situation to check out what?s on?Facebook?or Twitter. But don?t stay glued to your phone throughout the wedding?and definitely put it away during the ceremony.

4. Turn off your tech

Trust us: you do not want to be the person whose phone rings in the middle of the ceremony. Not only is it terribly embarrassing for you, it?s sure to upset the everyone there. To avoid getting the cold shoulder from everyone, you should silence your phone and any other gadgets you?re carrying on you. Or, better yet, you can turn them off entirely: this means no chance of accidentally leaving your ringer on or the noise of it vibrating disturbing anyone nearby.

5. Be good to your friends and they?ll be good to you

The cardinal rule of etiquette really comes down to just being nice to others. And this goes double when you?re posting to social networks. Make sure you consider how what you?re posting will look to others and whether it might upset anyone. There?s a good chance you?ll catch?an unflattering or inappropriate photo?or two as the evening progresses, and no one?s going to want to wake up the next morning to find embarrassing photos online. This rule goes for comments, too: be polite, and if you can?t be polite, be quiet.

If you want to keep your friends as your friends, be sure to think before you post, and skip posting anything rude or embarrassing. No matter how funny you may find it, the laugh isn?t worth upsetting your friends.

Just remember the rules

These rules aren?t especially different from the everyday etiquette of social media?and so they shouldn?t be too hard to remember and follow. However, at a wedding?which is supposed the event of a lifetime for the happy couple?you should be especially careful to practice social media manners. Because, trust us, committing a social faux pas at a wedding can get remembered?and not in a good way?for a long time.

Having trouble remembering what to do? Then we can pare the list own to a single rule: keep your phone silent and in your pocket!

And now that we?ve gotten that covered, be sure to enjoy the wedding!

Japan's Military Endangers the U.S.

AP Photo

Since returning to office in December, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has done little to reassure his neighbors that Japan comes in peace. Within his first two weeks of office, he ordered a review of his country's defense guidelines, which his defense minister, Itsunori Onodera, described as "a priority we must work on with no letup." On July 26, Japan's Defense Ministry released interim results of the review, urging significant military upgrades. It included plans to create an amphibious island defense force, and hinted at the possibility of preemptive strikes against foreign military targets.

Opelousas mayor to veto raise for city employees

The Opelousas City Council will have to rethink a citywide raise it approved Monday after Mayor Donald Cravins, citing insufficient funding, said he will veto the measure.

The Daily World reports (http://bit.ly/13v4Dl0 ) Cravins had warned earlier in the meeting that if the council passed a budget that included a raise for all city employees, he would veto it.

"If you vote to give it to everybody, no one will be able to get it," he said, referring to the potentially unsustainable nature of the raise.

Pay raises were a hotly debated item weeks ago at the city's budget committee meeting. The raise the council voted on Monday was actually a raise that was suspended for the 2012-13 fiscal year for the same reason ? insufficient funding. Because the council suspended the raise rather than denying it, it is legally bound to grant that raise before it grants any subsequent raises should funding become available.

The original budget committee recommendation was to grant the old raise only for municipal civil service employees, which includes street, parks, water, sewer, tourism and executive employees. Excluded were police, fire, city court and city marshal employees.

The municipal civil service raise would cost the city around $90,000 before benefits and overtime. If it included the other employees, it would add another $177,000.

Police Chief Perry Gallow and Fire Chief Lee Cahanin both lobbied for their employees to be included in a 2.5 percent raise because, they said, segregating which employees get raises would be unfair and their employees regularly put their lives on the line.

MUSIGA & NAFTI To Set Up Music Production Department | News ...

Edem, Obour, Rex Omar. Appietus and Prof. Linus Abraham after the discussion

Edem, Obour, Rex Omar. Appietus and Prof. Linus Abraham after the discussion

The Management of the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) has held discussions with Executives and representatives of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) on the establishment of a Music Recording Department at NAFTI, which will lead to the award of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Production.

The information was contained in a joint press statement issued by MUSIGA and NAFTI.

It said the discussions focused on the content of the Music Production programme, and development of the necessary modern equipment and skilled faculty needed to develop a programme that responds to the needs of the film industry.

The statement explained that the BA in Music Production is intended to prepare and equip students to become highly skilled producers of musical and audio artefacts.

?The programme recognizes the creative, technical and compositional aspects of music production and aims to give students an academic and practical standpoint to be able to develop their craft and the craft in Ghana further. The BA degree is designed to equip musicians and composers with music production skills that are essential for success in today?s modern marketplace. Courses to be offered include Music Theory, Music and Sound Engineering, Composition and Performance, and African Music and Performance,? the statement added.

According to the Rector of NAFTI, Professor Linus Abraham, the Department is being developed in collaboration with MUSIGA to ensure it fits and corresponds to the needs of the Music Industry in Ghana.

Prof. Abraham therefore challenged MUSIGA to support realization of the initiative and also work towards the standardization of the requisite skills for all levels and aspects of the industry in Ghana. He expressed the view that such efforts can result in Ghanaian music genres attaining world class status.

Bice Osei Kuffour, aka Obour, the president of MUSIGA, in his response expressed MUSIGA?s commitment to the idea since it will fill a void in the professional training of musicians that has long existed in the industry in Ghana.

He indicated that there are a few music education institutions available in Ghana, and he noted that the addition of music business and marketing courses to the programme is crucial to developing the music courses in Ghana.

He was optimistic that the establishment of the Media and Creative Arts University will galvanize efforts by Ghanaian musicians to attain world class status.

A committee (made of representatives from NAFTI and MUSIGA) to fashion out the road map to the establishment of the Department has been set up under the chairmanship of Prof. John Collins, a patron of MUSIGA and a lecturer at the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Legon.

NAFTI is in the process of being transformed into a Media and Creative Arts University to cater for the professional skills development of the creative arts industry. The President has identified the creative arts as a viable area of economic development for the nation and has expressed the vision of turning the industry in Ghana into a global competitive industry.

As a media arts university, NAFTI will provide training at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the creative arts in general ? in Film, Graphic Design, Production Design, Photography, Animation, Video, Multimedia Production, Broadcast Journalism, Performance for Film, Music Recording and Production, Film Producing and Entertainment Business Management, Broadcast and Media Engineering, amongst others.

The Department of Music Production is part of the gradual process of realizing this transformation in NAFTI. In the past year, the Multimedia Production and the Broadcast Journalism departments have been added to the programmes in Film and Television Production.

In attendance were industry giants such as Zapp Mallet, Willie Roi, Appietus, Rex Omar, Edem and Bessa Simons while NAFTI was represented by the heads of Departments of NAFTI.

The new MUSIGA Department of Music Production is expected to be operational by September 2014.

Washington, July 30:??

The US Department of Commerce has opened a probe into allegations that India and eight other countries are illegally selling steel pipe at an unfairly low prices in America.

?Domestic steel pipe producers are being crippled by an onslaught of foreign competitors illegally dumping imports in the United States,? Senator Sherrod Brown said, days after the Commerce Department launched a probe against South Korea, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine of unfair and illegal trade practises.

Brown and Senator Rob Portman yesterday called on the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to protect domestic producers of Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) from foreign competitors that use unfair and illegal trade practises.

?The International Trade Commission must commit to Ohio?s workers and businesses and crack down on countries that sell their products at unfair prices. As our trade deficit widens, levelling the playing field is the only way to protect local jobs, and in the future, create them,? Browne said after sending the joint letter to US ITC.

Noting that Ohio-based companies that produce Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) support many good-paying jobs in the state, Portman said if the ITC does not stand up for these American manufactured goods and punish foreign companies who are flooding US, our markets, with unfairly imported cheap products, businesses and thousands of American workers are at risk.

?American manufactured goods must be allowed to compete with their global competitors on a level playing field,? Portman said.

OCTG are used for domestic oil exploration, particularly in the shale industry, and are produced in Ohio by companies including US Steel in Lorain, Wheatland Tube Company in Warren, Vallourec Star in Youngstown, and TMK IPSCO in Brookfield.

Each is among the plaintiffs accusing South Korea, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine of unfair and illegal trade practises.

The two Senators said OCTG imports from these countries have increased from 840,000 net tons in 2010 to more than 1,770,000 net tons in 2012, with the number continuing to rise.

Despite historically high level of demand for steel pipe, its domestic industry in the United States has deteriorated due to imports, which data shows, have consistently and substantially undersold the market.

This has resulted in petitions that allege dumping margins of at least 30 percent, and in most cases, significantly more, the lawmakers said.

The U.S. Department of Energy Awards Intelligent Light $1 Million Phase II SBIR Grant to Commercialize VisIt Open Source Software

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded Intelligent Light a $1 Million Phase II grant to commercialize the VisIt open source software. Intelligent Light has begun integrating FieldView??? its flagship CFD post-processing software with VisIt, the open source interactive parallel visualization and graphical analysis tool from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Intelligent Light has been working with VisIt and the DOE's VisIt team for more than a year developing prototype technologies under a Phase I SBIR grant. The success of that work, along with endorsements from CFD users in both government and industry, led to a proposal to DOE to incorporate VisIt technology within the FieldView product line while preserving open source access.

The DOE responded by awarding a grant for nearly $1 million to keep the collaboration moving forward. The Phase II Small Business Innovative Research grant by the Department of Energy Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research (OASCR), supports the integration of FieldView and VisIt, combining the immense feature set and proven scalability of VisIt with the intuitive, engineering-oriented user interface of FieldView and top-level customer support for which Intelligent Light is known.

'Awards such as this through the SBIR program are a very positive step making this technology more broadly available to specific scientific areas through a re-packaging in a domain specific way, and broadening the user base and community of this DOE investment,'? said David Pugmire, Scientist, Visualization Task Leader, Climate Change Science Institute, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

'We are extremely grateful that the Department of Energy views our work as worthy of support; we are in perfect alignment with DOE's desire to deploy its state-of-the-art tools to benefit industry,'? asserts Steve Legensky, General Manager at Intelligent Light. 'As a first step, Intelligent Light will enable VisIt to write out FieldView XDBs (extract database files) and will contribute the binary libraries to the VisIt open source repository.'? FieldView XDBs are an effective solution to the big data challenge. Compact and numerically accurate, they enable efficient post-processing of transient or remotely computed datasets. Like Adobe? PDF files, XDBs can be shared, archived, read and used for interactive analysis with a low cost FieldView viewer.

    Vegetarians Going Vegan?A Growing Trend

russell_brand_kristen_bellOver the past few years, it seems to me that many longtime vegetarians are deciding to become vegans. Perhaps this is a reflection of the growing popularity of veganism due to documentaries such as Forks Over Knives, and bestselling books including The Kind Life by Alicia Silverstone and?Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. Or maybe it?s because vegetarians have come to the realization that the cruelty to laying hens and animals exploited for their milk is just as horrendous as killing animals for their meat.

Two major celebrities who recently made the switch from vegetarianism to veganism are Russell Brand and Kristen Bell.

Russell Brand has been a vegetarian since age 14, and a vegan since October 2011.

    images

    ?

?Even as a junkie I stayed true (to vegetarianism)-?I shall have heroin, but I shan?t have a hamburger.? What a sexy little paradox.?

    ?

    ?

    ?

At ?age 11, Kristen Bell became a vegetarian. She became vegan in January 2012.

    images-1

    ?

?I have always been an animal lover. I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with-dogs and cats, for example-from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat. I always loved my brussel sprouts.?

    ?

I figured that Russell and Kristen were way too busy to let me interview them, so I decided to interview my brother, Matt, who was a vegetarian for 26 years until recently deciding to go vegan. Matt is one of the nicest, most interesting, and honest people I know (he takes after me, LOL!). In my opinion, his transformation after making the switch from vegetarian to vegan was nothing short of stunning. Please note that Matt admits to not maintaining an especially healthy diet until he became a vegan, and his lifestyle change also included exercise. I hope you enjoy this interview with my happy and healthy vegan brother.

My brother, Matt, approximately one year into his vegan lifestyle?

INTERVIEW WITH MY BROTHER, MATTHEW, ABOUT HIS SWITCH FROM VEGETARIANISM TO VEGANISM

ME: How long have you been a vegan, Matt?

MATT:?I?ve been a vegan for 13 months, and before that I was a vegetarian for 26 years.

ME: Do you mind my asking you how old you are now?

MATT: Don?t you know? ;) ? Going to be 57 next month.

ME: Of course I know, wise ass. I?m just trying to establish a background for the readers. Anyway, how old were you when you became a vegetarian?

    MATT: 30 years old.

ME: I recall you being an extremely picky eater as a child. In fact, your entire food repertoire consisted of hamburgers and hot dogs, if memory serves. How good is my memory?

    MATT: You left out pizza!

ME:?I certainly did! Moving on, what were your reasons for becoming a vegetarian?

MATT: I was always aware that I was eating a dead animal, and though I ate meat I?ve always been slightly repulsed by it on some level. That?s the core of it. Health, politics, morality, and animal rights were secondary, I?m embarrassed to say, but whatever gets you into it, right?? I only ate beef ? no other kind of flesh. I started to realize how easy it would be to simply give up meat altogether. I was savvy enough to realize that I had to seriously reevaluate my eating habits if I wanted to get proper nutrition. I began in the mid-1980s, when there was a lot less good info than what is available now. I read that I needed to mix certain foods like legumes and grains at every meal in order to get the complete protein to replace meat. It?s now understood to be a lot easier than that to get proper nutrition. Although I worked at that, I can?t say that I ate correctly in many other ways.

ME: Ah, yes? you became vegetarian because of ?the gross factor.? That?s as good a reason as any. Can you describe, as best as you can, what your typical diet was like when you were a vegetarian?

MATT: Unfortunately, I didn?t maintain an especially healthy diet ? until I became a vegan. I ate a lot of cheese, pasta, fattening foods. My diet was not especially well balanced, and I didn?t cook for the first 15 years, so I always ate out. I?ve never been a big dessert guy, but I often ate huge portions of my main dishes, always with a soda. Not a good thing.

ME:?I appreciate your honesty. What were your favorite foods when you were a vegetarian?

MATT: Spaghetti, pizza, Indian food, Mexican food, pizza, Thai food, beer, soft drinks, pizza, pizza, and pizza. Actually, I still love those things, but with alterations.

ME: Did you have any health issues as a vegetarian?

MATT: Yes. Some diet-related problems were obesity, borderline high cholesterol, high blood pressure. I was pre-diabetic. I was living proof that vegetarianism doesn?t keep you thin and healthy, if anyone is under that illusion. And, of course, it didn?t help that my exercise routine was inconsistent, at best.

ME: Not a pretty picture. Again, I thank you for your honesty. So, you have been vegan for 13 months now, right?

    Matt: Yup.

ME: What inspired you to make the leap from vegetarianism to veganism?

    MATT: A couple of factors:

Last May I arrived at a point in my life when I was at my heaviest ever and I felt horrible. Just totally uncomfortable in my body. My friend Ted told me about the Blueprint juice cleanse, which he was doing. I?m not a believer in crash diets and special cleanses, but it sounded like an appealing way to kickstart a healthy lifestyle change. It involved relatively fresh juices that were flash pasteurized. Expensive as hell, but paying all that money made me feel like I was making a serious commitment. I kept it up for four days.

The other factor was you. You had successfully changed over to a vegan diet, and you suggested I try it for a few days or longer to see how I felt. I took your challenge, and I think you were a bit surprised to find out I stayed with it.

The bottom line is I didn?t merely change over to veganism. My mindset was to permanently change my lifestyle to become healthy and to eat as well as I could. I started exercising three to four times a week. I didn?t want to think of this as going on a diet, because diets end. I meant for it to be a permanent lifestyle change, so I had to find a way to eat that allowed me to be satisfied for the rest of my life.

Me: I was actually quite surprised that you stayed with veganism. Pleasantly surprised! I like the way you describe the change as a lifestyle change, as opposed to a diet. Did you find the transition to be difficult?

Matt: Surprisingly, not at all. The juice thing was a great way to launch the change. I?ve found that when you eat a well-thought-out, well-balanced diet, you become satisfied with proper portions of food. ?Proper? is pretty small compared with the portions I used to eat. I?ve enjoyed cooking as an occasional sport over the years, but now I cook a lot, and I?ve become pretty good at it. When you enjoy your own cooking, it makes it easy to stick to a healthy diet. You can control everything you put in your mouth. A novel concept after all the years I brought home my meals from outside.

Me: I agree that you?ve become quite a good cook. I love your stir-fries, homemade pizzas, and sorbets. Could you talk about all of the dietary changes you made when you went from being a vegetarian to a vegan, in addition to nixing the dairy?

Matt: Obviously no more eggs or dairy. Lots of tofu (though I probably eat more processed tofu products than I should). I eat a lot less sugar, white flour. I traded white rice for brown or brown basmati and various whole grains. I still eat a lot of the ?ethnic? food that I love. I go to the farmers market in town and buy fresh fruit and vegetables. I eat lots of beans and nuts. I bought a juicer. I also take a couple of Garden of Life Vitamin Code multivitamins for ?50 and Wiser Men? twice a day. Plus I drink a lot of filtered water and tea.

Me: Sounds excellent! Have you felt differently at all since you made these changes?

    Matt: Big time.

    Me: How so?

Matt: I feel physically comfortable, and I like the way I look a lot more these days. I have a lot more energy. I sleep better. I actually feel euphoric sometimes. I think my mental acuity is sharper (or maybe it was so dull to start with that it just seems that way?). I just feel healthier overall!

Me:?Did the condition of your health change in any way since you made the change?

Matt: It changed dramatically. I lost weight in a slow and healthy way, over a period of about 10 months. I dropped from 224 lbs to 178 lbs, and have maintained the latter weight for about 3 months. (I?m ready to lose more, though.) My total cholesterol dropped from 199 to under 150 in the first three months of my new health regimen. All of the red danger flags I had on my blood work disappeared. My sleep apnea has significantly improved. Allergies ? which I?ve had ever since I can remember ? have pretty much disappeared: I no longer need my Zyrtec and Clarinex pills. And I haven?t gotten sick at all. I attribute all of this to the one-two punch of changing my diet and getting regular exercise.

Me: It seems almost too good to be true! Are you finding it harder to be a vegan than a vegetarian?

Matt: Not really. It?s a learning curve that requires a bit of discipline. But that applies to anything that you?re striving to achieve, I guess. I?m having a lot of fun cooking, which I find very rewarding on a number of levels. So that makes it easier.

Me: Are you enjoying the foods you are eating as a vegan?

    Matt: Very much.

Me: Do you have any favorite vegan eateries or restaurants?

Matt: Veggie Heaven in Montclair, NJ, and Denville, NJ. I like Candle 79, Franchia and Blossom in NYC too. And Maoz falafel!

Me: Those are my faves too! Do you have any favorite guilty vegan pleasures (and I?m talking about food!)?

Matt: The scallion pancakes at Veggie Heaven ? deep fried. Guilty, guilty, guilty.

Me: What are some of your favorite meals that you prepare for yourself at home?

Matt: I make homemade lentil or veggie burgers with sweet potato ?fries? (i.e. baked). Lots of stir-fries and sauteed veggies. Thai and Indian dishes. Soups ? hard to screw those up. Pasta sauces from scratch. Kale chips. I?m always trying out cookbook recipes, and I?ve developed my own. I improvise a lot, and am almost always happy with the results. Also, I got some great recipes from your website.

Me: Thanks, Matt. Do you mind if we talk about your being vegan in the world of dating?

Matt: Uh oh. Nope ? don?t mind.

Me: Great. Do you find being vegan to be a hindrance at all to your dating life?

Matt: I didn?t think so until recently. I asked a woman I was dating for a few months about what she thought when we first started seeing each other. What issues influenced how our relationship would progress. She said she seriously considered the possibility that my being vegan would be a deal-breaker. She was a carnivore, and she didn?t like that I wasn?t. I didn?t have the same problem with her being a meat-eater, even though I felt it would be preferable if we had vegetarianism in common.

Me: Wow! That?s quite interesting! How did you deal with these issues?

Matt: In this particular case, we cooked a vegan meal together. Which was fun and romantic. Generally, I choose to eat in restaurants where my date and I can both eat whatever we want. If you?re going to date a non-vegan, you?re obliged to live and let live.

Me: And many people say that vegans are pushy and preachy. You are clearly not either of those things. Let?s talk about the rest of your lifestyle. Okay?

    Matt: Okay.

Me: You have not worn shoes, belts, or other clothing containing animal products for many years, even before you became vegan. Is that correct?

Matt: I did my best. It was very difficult to find a faux-leather belt, or some other material, that was suitable for the workplace, and I wore man-made shoes long enough to royally screw up my feet. At that point I?m sorry to say I caved in and bought leather shoes for a short period. Eventually I was able to find cruelty-free shoes that worked for me.

Me: Sorry about your feet. But the vegan shoes now available have come a long way. We?ll meet and go shopping at Moo Shoes downtown soon. Don?t be sorry about caving in with the leather shoes. In my opinion, veganism is not about perfection.?For how many years, approximately, did you mostly abstain from using animal products?

Matt: I made a solid effort to use cruelty-free products for as long as I?ve been a vegetarian.

Me: Was this difficult for you?

Matt: It was very difficult. I had to learn the ?code? of the ingredients in shampoos, soaps, etc. I avoided companies that tested on animals, so there was all that to be aware of. These things are a lot more transparent now.

Me: I admire you and respect you for your efforts over such a long period of time. Do you now have any favorite, comfortable cruelty-free shoes that you wear which you could recommend?

Matt: For casual wear I love the Crocs Santa Cruz canvas loafers. Lightweight and super comfortable. They?re about $55 and totally worth it. I have about 4 pairs in different colors. The style might not be for everybody though. Haven?t found a formal/business shoe that I?d especially recommend.

    http://www.crocs.com/crocs-mens-santa-cruz/10128,default,pd.html?cid=261&q=santa%20cruz

Me: Again, you need to visit Moo Shoes or The Brave Gentlemen Shop online, but thanks for the casual shoe recommendation. How do you feel now that you are 13 months into your vegan diet or, rather, your vegan lifestyle?

    Matt: Great!

Me: Do you believe that you will be vegan for the rest of your life?

    Matt: I do.

Me: For any of our vegetarian readers out there, would you recommend that they make the leap to becoming vegan?

Matt: I would. Cheese and eggs are replaceable. As regular VAP readers know, there are great cheese alternatives such as Daiya and Go Veggie! I make great veggie burgers without using eggs. It can be tough going to restaurants with friends, but it?s also tough as a vegetarian. You learn to make adjustments. I feel so much better physically that at the end of the day it?s really not a hard choice.

Me:?For the record, Matt, on the many occasions when you came to my home for holidays and celebrations before I was a vegan, did I have enough decent vegetarian foods for you to eat?

Matt: Always! Even before you were vegan. Generally speaking, I?ve found that it?s always a good idea to let your host know what your diet is, or remind them, so they won?t be surprised or offended when you don?t eat. I usually tell them not to go to extra trouble, but that?s a bit disingenuous since I?m an invited guest and they?re going to want to cater to me.

Me:?I never appreciated your commitment to vegetarianism until I became a vegan. For most of my life, being a fashion diva was more important to me than abstaining from the use of animal products. I feel really badly about that now. For the record, will you now forgive me for being somewhat dismissive of your vegetarianism during the years before I became a vegan, and understand that I may have been sleepwalking through my life at that time?

Matt: I never took it that way, but if you need to do a mea culpa, feel free.

Me: Thanks, I need to do a mea culpa. What the hell is a mea culpa, anyway? For the record, Matt, on a scale of 1 to 10, how great are my vegan homemade tempeh reubens?

Matt: I?d put it on a scale of one to DAMN. It would be a DAMN!

Me: Love that answer,. I have to remember to post that recipe. What about some of the other vegan foods I make for you such as my Split Pea Soup?

Matt: Love it. Glad you don?t make it with the fake ham flavor. Don?t like that. Can?t think of a meal you made that I didn?t like. (Do I get invited to your Thanksgiving now?)

Me: Yes, you are invited. I?m sure you knew that you would never be invited over to my home again if you didn?t answer my questions the way I wanted you to.

    Matt: Now you tell me!

    Me:?Ha ha.

Me: You are an awesome musician. Can you tell us a little bit about your band Empro Express?

Matt: The Empro Express Big Soul Band is a classic soul/R&B band that plays around the NY area. At the moment we have 14 pieces, so it?s a pretty big sound. We cover Motown and Stax and other ?60s soul. I?m one of two guitarists.?

Me: Tell me about the vocalists that appear with Empro.

Matt: We have variety show of sorts, where our different singers take a particular song. They back each other up, sing solo, duets ? it?s mix and match, and the audiences seem to enjoy the format. We have a great bunch of guys who when apart from the band are called Spank. They do a cappella tunes on cruise ships, Atlantic City, corporate affairs. They made it to Vegas in the latest season of America?s Got Talent. Sandra Taylor is a multiple winner of Showtime at the Apollo, and Norman Davis is a phenomenal singer who?s been with us for years. Finally, we have Danny Smalls, aka Geechie Dan, our own Otis Redding. Danny was recently featured in a NY Times article. He?s appearing as a singer in a movie coming out this November which stars Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whittaker, Angela Bassett and Morgan Freeman.

Me: I love Empro Express and its colorful cast of characters. I was so disappointed when Spank got cut last week from America?s Got Talent after making it through four rounds. Does Empro Express have any upcoming appearances scheduled?

Matt: Nothing on the immediate horizon, though we just played at Lucille?s Grill at BB King?s club in Times Square. We?ve also recently played the main room at BB?s, Connelly?s in Times Square, and a great venue called City Winery.

Me: I really enjoyed Empro?s last City Winery appearance. Do you think Empro will be playing at the New York City Marathon again this year?

Matt: I sure hope so. We?ve played at the Columbus Circle station for the past few years, as well as at the Finish Line. It?s always a lot of fun ? very inspiring for us, and hopefully for the runners. Especially when we play ?25 Miles?!

Me: I?m sure it is! Thank you for the interview Matt, and for letting me post this video clip of Empro Express, one of my all-time favorite soul bands.

    Matt: Thanks, Debby!

    Me: Namaste!

Calling all 'codaholics': Automakers vie for tech talent

By Deepa Seetharaman and Tim Gaynor

DETROIT/YUMA, Arizona (Reuters) - Automakers have embarked on an ambitious drive to hire software "codaholics," an effort that is increasingly pitting Detroit against its technology partners in Silicon Valley.

Just ask Raj Nair, who leads global product development for Ford Motor Co . Nair said he lobbied his niece to join the second-largest U.S. automaker as an engineer. But her passions lay elsewhere. She now works for Microsoft Corp , Ford's partner on its in-car entertainment and communications technology.

"The auto industry is so much more high-tech than people realize," Nair said in an interview early this year. "So we're really competing against West Coast industries."

Four years after a sweeping industry restructuring that included massive job cuts, Ford and its U.S. rivals need to hire thousands of engineers at a time when software is playing a much more prominent role in vehicle design than even a few years ago.

Millions of lines of computer code increasingly govern core vehicle functions like braking and air-conditioning. Electronic parts including sensors and microcontrollers, used in laptop computers and smartphones, are the backbone of such vehicles.

The shift has General Motors Co , Ford and Chrysler Group LLC vying for a new kind of talent - engineers with software, electronic and computer network skills - that has typically ignored Detroit. It has forced the auto industry to sweeten salaries and seek to burnish Michigan's image as a good place to work - no easy task, the automakers concede.

Ford is about halfway through its goal of hiring 3,000 salaried employees this year, as part of its largest hiring blitz in more than a decade. The bulk of these jobs will be engineers and IT specialists who will be based in Michigan.

GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson has said he wants to hire thousands of "codaholics" to write software applications for GM's lineup of vehicles.

But those same candidates are also fielding attractive offers from other industries - including the likes of Apple Inc and Google Inc . Executives, engineers and recruiters expect the war for talent only to intensify over the next several years.

"You look at the huge growth in the computer industry, cell phones, all the other technology that has become more interwoven in our daily lives," said James Kolhoff, GM's global chief engineer of transmission and hybrid controls.

"That's pulling on the same types of skill sets that we want to recruit in the automotive industry," he said.

    THE CAR AS COMPUTER

This spring, 15 teams of students from U.S. and Canadian universities gathered in a large workshop next to a desert Army base in Yuma, Arizona, as part of the EcoCar 2 engineering competition. The event, sponsored by GM and the U.S. Department of Energy, calls on contestants to modify a Chevrolet Malibu sedan to make it more fuel-efficient.

For GM, events like this are crucial to attracting people like Amanda Hyde, 24, who is working on a masters degree in mechanical engineering at Ohio State University.

Hyde described herself as a minority among her peers for being a bona fide car nut who "gets chills" whenever she opens the hood of a car. This summer, she is an intern at GM's proving grounds in Milford, Michigan.

"As a mechanical engineer, I mourn a little bit that the car is turning into a computer," said Hyde, who competed in the EcoCar event in May. But she adds: "You can't make it at a major automaker without an understanding of software."

Earlier this month, Ford offered free software updates to its hybrid owners to boost gasoline mileage - a type of update that would not have been possible just a decade ago.

The role of computer systems in the vehicle is growing as consumers clamor for "connected" cars that can sync with smartphones, provide real-time traffic reports or parallel-park themselves.

Ernst & Young predicts that 104 million vehicles worldwide will have some form of connectivity in the next dozen years. That is more than five times the 20 million such cars expected to be sold this year, the consulting firm said in a recent report.

"So many things that we're controlling via software such as the active grille shutters, how we manage cooling and temperatures - all of those were mechanically controlled in the past," Nair said.

"As a percentage of product development, there is a much heavier focus on the electronics and software side than five, ten years ago," he said.

    COMPETITION TO INTENSIFY

The competition has already pushed up starting salaries for software engineers and forced recruiters to redouble their hiring efforts. There are five software and electrical engineering jobs for every college graduate in these fields, said Garth Motschenbacher, director of employer relations at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Five years ago, auto engineers were willing to accept starting salaries between $50,000 and $45,000, said Matt LePage, lead technical recruiter for GTA Staffing, a Dearborn, Michigan-based firm focused on the auto industry.

Now, starting annual salaries can be two-thirds higher, ranging from between $65,000 and $75,000 or even higher, according to LePage and others including staffing firms and university officials.

"We do recognize that the cost of living is very different here than in the West Coast," said Felicia Fields, Ford's vice president of human resources. "So we're not trying to match that. We're paying competitively for this area, and that's where the vast majority of these jobs are."

In many ways, the explosive growth in Silicon Valley today mirrors the boom in Detroit about a hundred years ago when Henry Ford more than doubled worker wages to $5 a day. In recent years, however, the U.S. auto industry and Detroit itself have been marred by job losses and diminished prospects.

Automakers are redoubling their recruiting efforts to combat that image, by showing how they have changed since the 2009 economic crisis that pushed GM and Chrysler Group LLC into bankruptcy.

Pitching the Detroit area as a desirable place to live has also been a perennial challenge, one that grew a little tougher after the city filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection last week.

Fields said Ford recruiters are told to address those issues head-on, while also promoting the positive elements of the region, such as the burgeoning development downtown, sports teams and Michigan's natural resources.

"The incredible competition for technical people in so many companies and so many industries, it is much more difficult," she said. "We can't just pick a number and find all the candidates. We have to work much harder."
